Smart Source built the MEDguard mobile app for Mediateknik AB. The app runs on iOS and Android. It connects field operators with real-time data from AI surveillance cameras on heavy machinery.

Operators can monitor their surroundings from their mobile device. They can switch between Safety and Watch modes instantly. MEDguard replaces manual, reactive safety processes with a connected, proactive system.

The Challenge

Industrial and construction environments often have poor visibility. Heavy machinery creates blind spots. Personnel move in and out of hazardous zones. Critical safety information is often communicated too late.

Mediateknik AB had built MEDguard — an AI-based safety system using Axis cameras. The system detects people near machinery and triggers immediate alerts. It also switches between Safety Mode (daytime) and Watch Mode (nighttime).

What was missing was a mobile interface. Operators needed direct, real-time control from the field.

The key requirements were:

The Solution

Smart Source designed and built the MEDguard app for Mediateknik AB. It is the primary tool for field operators. The app runs on iOS and Android using C# and .NET MAUI. Operators can monitor and control the safety system in real time.

Login is handled through Milestone XProtect. This ensures only authorised personnel can access the system. Communication with IoT hardware runs over MQTT with TLS encryption. MQTT is a lightweight protocol. It works reliably even with limited connectivity.

The app follows MVVM architecture. CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps handle automated builds and delivery. Smart Source managed the full project — from design and UX to integration and deployment.

Key capabilities delivered

Technologies used

C# · .NET MAUI · MQTT over TLS · Milestone XProtect · Axis cameras · Azure DevOps · iOS · Android · MVVM architecture

The Result

The MEDguard app gave Mediateknik AB a complete interface for their safety system. Safety operations in machine-intensive environments became more structured and responsive.

Key outcomes

MEDguard connects systems, data, and users in one mobile experience. It shows how thoughtful software can meaningfully improve safety in complex industrial environments.

Frequently Asked Questions about MEDguard – IoT Safety System

What technologies power the MEDguard mobile application?

The app is built with C# and .NET MAUI — one codebase for iOS and Android. Communication runs over MQTT with TLS encryption. It is a lightweight protocol designed for industrial environments. Authentication uses Milestone XProtect VMS. The architecture follows MVVM with CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps.

How is access to the MEDguard system secured?

Access control is integrated with Milestone XProtect. This is the video management system already used by Mediateknik AB. Operator identities and permissions are managed centrally. No separate login system is needed for the app.

Does MEDguard work in environments with limited or unstable connectivity?

Yes. MQTT is designed for IoT communication with limited bandwidth. It is lightweight, low-latency, and handles interruptions reliably. This makes it well-suited for industrial environments where network stability cannot always be guaranteed.

How does MEDguard integrate with camera hardware and existing surveillance infrastructure?

The app communicates directly with Mediateknik AB's MEDguard AI system via MQTT. The system connects to Axis cameras with intelligent human detection. Smart Source handled the full integration with the surveillance infrastructure.

How is GDPR and data privacy handled in a system with AI-based human detection?

MEDguard is owned and operated by Mediateknik AB. They are responsible for GDPR compliance. The app handles only system commands and real-time status. No image storage or personal data processing takes place in the app. All communication is encrypted via TLS.

Can the system scale to more machines, sites, or users?

Yes. The architecture is built for scalability. MEDguard supports clients across 12 industries. The mobile app can handle additional devices and operators without changes to the core architecture.
