Smart Source developed the MEDguard mobile application for Mediateknik AB — a cross-platform iOS and Android app that connects field operators with real-time safety data from AI-driven surveillance hardware mounted on heavy machinery. The solution enables operators to monitor their surroundings, switch between Safety and Watch modes, and respond to on-site conditions directly from their mobile device. MEDGuard transforms fragmented, reactive safety processes into a connected, proactive system built for the realities of industrial and construction environments.

The Challenge

In industrial and construction environments, operators routinely work in conditions where visibility is limited and situational awareness depends on fragmented, manual processes. Heavy machinery creates blind spots, personnel move in and out of hazardous zones, and critical safety information is often communicated too late to prevent incidents.

Mediateknik AB had developed MEDguard — an AI-based safety system using Axis camera hardware and intelligent human-detection to address exactly these risks. The system could identify people in dangerous proximity to machinery, trigger immediate alerts, and switch between daytime Safety Mode and nighttime Watch Mode. What was missing was a mobile Industrial IoT (IIoT) interface that gave operators direct, real-time control over the system from the field.

The key requirements were clear:

The Solution

Smart Source designed and developed the MEDguard mobile application as the operational interface between field operators and Mediateknik's connected surveillance infrastructure. Built with C# and .NET MAUI for seamless cross-platform deployment on iOS and Android, the app gives operators a single, intuitive tool to monitor and control the safety system in real time.

Authentication is handled through Milestone XProtect, ensuring that only authorised personnel can access the system. Communication with the IoT hardware on the machinery runs over MQTT with TLS encryption — a lightweight, low-latency protocol designed for reliable messaging in environments with limited or variable connectivity.

The application was built following an MVVM architecture pattern, with CI/CD pipelines established in Azure DevOps for automated builds and continuous delivery. Smart Source was responsible for the full development lifecycle, from system design and UX to integration, testing, and deployment.

The Result

The MEDguard mobile application gave Mediateknik AB a complete, production-ready interface for their safety system — enabling a more structured and responsive approach to safety in machine-intensive environments.

Key outcomes

By connecting systems, data, and users in a single mobile experience, MEDGuard supports safer and more controlled operations — and demonstrates how thoughtful software development can meaningfully improve safety outcomes in complex industrial environments.
